MASM 6.11
A Sample Program for Working with MASM 6.11
This is a program that has been compiled and run using MASM 6.11 and debugged using
CodeView. The steps I used to input and run it were:
1) Through start - programs in W98 or NT, open a DOS window
2) Run the little batch program that sets up your path.
3) cd to your working directory - anyplace for which you have write permissions.
4) pwb
5) File - new
6) Enter your file and then save as in your working directory. It has to have the extension .asm.
7) In options - build options, select debug options rather than production options.
8) In project, compile the program.
9) In run, rebuild all. When you do this, you will have the option to debug. Do so.
10) The Codeview window will appear, taking over the entire DOS window.
11) Several slightly unexpected things will happen -
a) The memory 2 window is more useful for displaying memory - it mirrors changes as you
run or step, so you can see the changes happening.
b) The data does not start at the beginning of the data segment, but at an offset you can spot
by looking at the data - in my case it started at 134H.
c) If you are not seeing the display you like in the memory 2 window, options - memory2
window will let you customize it to display bytes or words. Resizing the window will
cause it to show 8 words.
12) To get out of Codeview, or to recompile, do File - Exit, this will put you back in your edit
window. File - Exit (or save and exit) will get you back to DOS. You can get back to your
file by doing pwb myfile.asm
